Exploring the Algarve: A Return to Vilamoura

Some destinations reveal themselves fully on the first visit, while others invite you back, offering a different perspective each time. Portugal has always been the latter for me.

There is a distinct sense of calm that defines the country, making it one of my most frequented European retreats. The Algarve, occupying the southernmost coastline, masterfully balances rugged natural beauty with refined luxury. Here, dramatic cliffs overlook the sea, and expansive stretches of whitewashed sand provide a quiet contrast to the region’s lively resort towns.

Finding Balance at Four Seasons Vilamoura

On our most recent visit, I travelled with my family to Vilamoura, a prestigious enclave less than thirty minutes from Faro. When travelling as a family, the challenge is often finding an environment that accommodates both relaxation and activity.

We stayed at the Four Seasons Vilamoura, which served as an ideal base. Set within the heart of the resort town, it offered the kind of spacious comfort that allows you to properly settle in. With extensive indoor facilities and three outdoor pools, there was ample room to unwind and enjoy the slower pace of the hotel’s surroundings.

The Rhythm of the Marina

A short distance from the hotel lies the Marina de Vilamoura, the undisputed focal point of the area. I find the atmosphere here is best appreciated early in the day. Walking along the waterfront at sunrise, before the crowds arrive, the perfectly aligned boutiques and gently bobbing yachts create a highly curated, almost cinematic setting.

As the day progresses, the energy shifts. The marina fills with visitors exploring the designer shops or arranging afternoon boat rentals. It is a space designed for leisurely exploration. The kind of place where you can easily lose a few hours simply browsing or watching the boats return from the coast.

A Natural Pause at OMarisco

Much like my experiences in Barcelona, I believe the true character of a place is found in its culinary traditions. The dining options along the marina are vast, but we were drawn to the authentic flavours of Portuguese seafood.

We chose to have lunch at OMarisco, opting for a table on the decking area directly overlooking the water. We ordered their renowned seafood rice, a dish that exemplifies what I love most about the region’s cooking. It relies entirely on the integrity of fresh, local ingredients, resulting in a meal that feels both spectacular and deeply grounding. Sitting by the water, sharing a thoughtfully prepared meal with exceptional service, offered a perfect, unhurried pause in the afternoon.

Final Thoughts

Whether you are cycling along the coast, exploring the waters, or simply enjoying the hospitality of the marina, Vilamoura offers a compelling mix of activity and stillness. Even after multiple visits, the Algarve maintains its ability to provide a genuinely restorative escape.
